Two Air Filter Pairs, One Model Badge
Ask three suppliers for a 320D air filter and you will be quoted 131-8822, 6I-2501 and occasionally a number that belongs to a completely different Cat family. The 131-8822 and the 6I-2501 are both right, and that is the problem: Caterpillar built the 320D and 320D L with two different air cleaner configurations, and the parts reference guide splits the air filter listing by which one the machine carries. The guide distinguishes them as air cleaners without a dust valve and with a dust valve, and each takes its own primary and its own safety element.
This is not a year-of-build question and not a regional-spec question, so no amount of guessing from the decal will resolve it. The two primaries differ in diameter — about 281.6 mm for the 6I-2501 against roughly 237 mm for the 131-8822 — which means one cannot be fitted in the other's housing at all. Attempts to force a match produce an element that looks seated in the photograph and leaks dust around the seal in service. On a machine working in quarry or demolition dust, that is the shortest route from a cheap filter to a scored cylinder kit.
What the Guides Actually Say
Cat's 320D and 320D L parts reference guide (serial prefixes PHX and SPN) lists both element pairs in the same air filter row, separated by the dust valve note, with the ultra-high-efficiency alternative shown beside each standard primary. Dealer copies of the same guide, arranged by other prefix groups for the 320D, repeat the pattern: the same two primary numbers, the same dust valve distinction.

The sizes in that table come from Cat parts data and aftermarket catalogues, and they do not overlap. That gap is what makes the housing, rather than the model badge, the deciding factor — and it is also why the pair must be ordered as a pair. The safety element seals on the centre bore of its own primary, so a 6I-2502 will not seal inside a 131-8822 and a 131-8821 will not seal inside a 6I-2501.
What a Dust Valve Is, and Why It Marks the Line
A dust valve is the rubber ejector at the bottom of an air cleaner that dumps the coarse fraction the pre-cleaner stage has already thrown out of the airstream, which is why some Cat air cleaner groups are described by it. For a parts buyer the practical value of the distinction is narrower and more useful: it is the label Cat uses to separate the two element groups in the 320D guide, so it tells you which of the two pairs belongs to the machine in front of you without needing the machine's build sheet.
Manufacturers do not publish the number of each configuration that left the factory, so there is no honest way to say which pair is "the common one" for a given market. Ordering by the number stamped on the element being replaced, plus the serial, is the only method that survives all of that.
How to Confirm Which Pair Your Machine Takes
Read the old element. The stamped number settles it in seconds. If the stamping is worn, photograph both elements next to a tape measure — bore and length are enough for us to identify the group.
Measure the primary. Around 281.6 mm outside diameter with a 148 mm bore is the 6I-2501 group; around 237 mm outside diameter is the 131-8822 group. The 44 mm difference between them is not something anyone confuses on a bench with the element in hand.
Check the safety element. A roughly 150 mm element inside the primary confirms the 6I-2501 / 6I-2502 pair. The 131-8821 that belongs to the other pair is a different size, so the safety element is a free cross-check on the primary.
Read the serial prefix. Cat's parts reference guides are organised by prefix, and the 320D / 320D L guide for the PHX and SPN groups is the one we use for confirmation. Send the prefix with your enquiry and we can check the listing against your machine rather than guessing from the model name.

Both pairs have deep crossover coverage, and it is worth knowing the anchors before you shop price. The second concerns the ultra-high-efficiency numbers. 128-2686 and 134-0685 are not cheaper substitutes or alternative manufacturers — they are Cat's UHE elements for the same two housing positions, and Cat's own literature puts their service life at up to six times the standard element in fine dust and heavy carbon environments. On a machine in a quarry or on demolition work they are usually the sensible buy; on a rental or light-duty machine they are money that will not come back.
