Ask three parts counters what a D6N filter set costs and you get three answers, because a D6N does not carry one filter list. It carries one per serial prefix group and, on the air side, per housing shape. Everything below comes from Cat's own parts data and the D6N dozer parts reference guide; the aftermarket crosses are the ones we can show a published source for.

The Set Cat Groups Together

Cat's own parts store shows which filters belong to the same service. On the 529-0132 page the group runs 529-0132 with the 528-7222 primary air filter, the 479-4131 water separator element (see the water separator range), the 360-8960 fuel element, the 462-1171 oil filter and the 322-3155 element assembly. That is the set a D6N comes into the workshop for, and it is worth ordering as one carton if the next delivery to site is weeks away.

Two things in that table decide whether a kit fits. The air housing first: a D6N built with the square air cleaner does not take the round element, and neither fits the other. Second, the water separator — 479-4131 is the element that sits inside a 479-4135 separator group, so a different separator assembly changes the element number. Both checks take thirty seconds on the machine.

Square or Round: The Air Side Split

Cat's D6N dozer parts reference guide names the housing shape as the difference between the two air filter sets, and Cat's parts pages list 539-6920 and 528-7222 against the same D6N, D6N LGP, D6N XL and D6N OEM names — proof that the machine name alone cannot resolve the order. The circular cleaner takes a round radial-seal cylinder with 528-7222 outside and 529-0132 inside; the square cleaner takes a non-round block with 539-6920 outside and 346-6694 inside. Open the housing, read the old element, then confirm the serial prefix off the PIN plate. Our D6N air filter housing guide walks through both, and the element sizes are on the 529-0132 and 346-6694 pages.

The Prefix Groups That Take Different Numbers

The D6N guide's tables are split by serial prefix, not by year, and the earlier groups do not carry the same elements as the current ones. JAH, DJA, DJY, LJR, MLW and GHS sit in their own rows with different air and fuel numbers from the PBA and PER groups — 346-6694, for example, is listed against PBA and PER rather than against the whole model. If your D6N carries an earlier prefix, treat this page as a starting point: read the numbers off the elements you remove, or send us the prefix and we confirm the current Cat number.

Intervals and Crosses: What This Page Leaves Out

Service intervals are deliberately absent. Change intervals on a dozer move with the machine, the engine build, fuel sulphur, ambient dust and the oil in use, and Cat sets them per serial number in that machine's own operation and maintenance manual; one hour figure quoted for every D6N site from West Africa to the Gulf is not a specification. The crosses in the table are leads, not guarantees — the 462-1171 crosses we publish are the ones where an independent catalogue and a filter manufacturer's own data agree. A number that reaches you from a single source with no dimensions attached is a starting point for a phone call, not a purchase order.

Earlier Numbers You May Find on the Old Filter

Two positions on the list above have a second Cat number in circulation, and both are worth knowing before you order. Sakura's catalogue crosses its A-44370 safety element to 447-0761 as well as to 529-0132, which usually means the parts book was updated at some point and the older number is what is stamped on the element in your hand — quote both and we confirm which is current for your prefix. The water separator element runs the same way in reverse: 479-4131 is the element listed for the 479-4135 separator group, and suppliers quote 479-4132 against machines on that same separator, so the separator group number settles it, not the model badge. On the oil side, 462-1171 carries 269-8325 as the earlier number Cat replaced; the two are the same standard-efficiency spin-on, and the thread and gasket can be checked against the filter you remove.

FAQ

Q: What filters does a Cat D6N take?
A: A Cat D6N takes 528-7222 with 529-0132 for the engine air cleaner if it has the circular housing, or 539-6920 with 346-6694 if it has the square housing, 462-1171 as the spin-on engine oil filter, 479-4131 as the water separator element in the fuel system, 525-6205 as the in-line fuel filter and 360-8960 as the fuel filter element. Cat groups the oil filter, the water separator and the air pair together on its own frequently-bought-together lists, which is why they are sold as a set. Earlier D6N builds under different serial prefixes list different air and fuel numbers, so the prefix on the PIN plate decides.

Q: Why do the air filter numbers differ between D6N machines?
A: Because the D6N was built with two different air cleaners. Cat's D6N dozer parts reference guide lists 539-6920 with 346-6694 for the square-shaped air cleaner housing and 528-7222 with 529-0132 for the circular one, and both primaries appear on Cat's parts pages against the same D6N, D6N LGP, D6N XL and D6N OEM model names. The prefix groups on the lower end of the guide's tables carry different air elements again, so the shape of the housing and the serial prefix both have to be checked before ordering a D6N air filter.

Q: Is the Cat D6N filter kit the same as the D6K2 filter kit?
A: Largely yes. The D6K2, D6K2 LGP and D6K2 XL appear on the same element lists as the D6N for 528-7222, 539-6920 and 462-1171, and the same numbers carry across the 953 and 963 track loaders, the 950 GC and the 924K / 938H wheel loaders. That is why one stocked filter set covers a mixed crawler and loader fleet — but the machine names on a parts list are not a substitute for the serial prefix, and a D6K2 XL and a D6N do not necessarily share every element on the list.

Q: Can you supply the D6N filter set as a kit instead of individual filters?
A: Yes. We quote the filters individually or as a consolidated set, including the cross-referenced equivalents and, where the machine allows, the primary and safety element as a pair rather than one at a time. Send the machine model, the serial prefix and the numbers from the old filters or a photograph of the housings, and we confirm the numbers, the thread and the seal dimensions before dispatch from Shanghai stock.

Send Us Your D6N Prefix — We Will Confirm the Full Set
