Read the application list above and it looks like a data-entry accident: a 20-tonne excavator, a D1 dozer, a backhoe loader, a 120 GC grader and a C4.4 generator set have almost nothing in common. What they do share is an engine family and the fuel module bolted to it. The C4.4, C6.6, C7.1 and C3.6 engines sit across the whole current Cat range, and 360-8960 is the cartridge that fuel system takes. That is why a supplier can quote one element for three hundred different machines and still be quoting a real number — and why a long application list is a reason to check your prefix, not a substitute for it.

At 81.5 mm across and 155 mm long, this is a compact element. It is worth knowing what it is not: it is not the 1R-0751 spin-on that the C6.4-powered 320D took, and it is not the 1R-1804 element that 320D2 machines with the threaded housing take. Those are three different fuel systems with three different elements.

Cartridge or Spin-On — the 320D2 Has Two Numbers in Circulation

If two suppliers have given you two different fuel filter numbers for the same 320D2, it does not automatically mean one of them is wrong. Caterpillar's parts store lists 360-8960 against the 320D2 and 320D2 GC, and Caterpillar's filter reference material also lists 1R-1804 against the 320D2, with 438-5386 as the water separator element. Both numbers are current parts.

They are not interchangeable, though, and the difference is physical rather than documentary. 360-8960 is a cartridge: it drops into a housing, seals on its ends and flows out-to-in. 1R-1804 is the threaded element we document on its own page, quoted with an M24 × 2 connection in supplier listings. A cartridge will not screw onto a spin-on head and a spin-on cannot be dropped into a cartridge housing. So the decision is not really a part-number decision — open the filter head and look. An element with two O-rings and no thread is a cartridge. A metal can with a thread on top is a spin-on. The Fuel Side Is Two Parts, Not One

Whatever element the machine takes, it is not the whole fuel service. These machines run a filter element plus a separate water separator element, and it is the separator that deals with the failure mode that actually stops a 320 in West Africa, the Gulf or the Andes: water and grit arriving in bulk drum fuel. Cat lists the 479-4131 and 479-4133 separator elements alongside 360-8960 for exactly that reason. Buyers who order "the fuel filter" twice end up with two primaries and a separator that has not been touched in a year.
