If you maintain used excavators and dozers bought from China, Japan or Korea, the aftercooler is one of the parts you will meet sooner or later — usually as a loss of power that the injection pump does not explain. When the charge-air cooler fails, the engine loses air density, not fuel. This guide covers the two types on Cat and Komatsu machines, how to identify yours, and what to order when it gives up.

1. Intercooler vs Aftercooler: Same Job, Two Names

Both words describe a heat exchanger that cools air after compression. In strict two-stage turbocharging terminology, the intercooler sits between compression stages and the aftercooler between the final stage and the engine. In modern heavy equipment the terms are used interchangeably — Caterpillar’s official name for the part is simply the aftercooler.

What matters on your machine is not the name but the cooling medium. Air-to-air aftercoolers (ATAAC) cool the charge air with ambient air through a finned core in the cooling package. Jacket-water aftercoolers (JWAC) cool it with engine coolant. The two fail differently, cost differently and are diagnosed differently.

The temperature difference matters when you buy. A jacket-water aftercooler can never cool the charge air below engine coolant temperature — on a hot day that means roughly 95–100°C air into the cylinders. An air-to-air unit gets the charge air much closer to ambient, which is why ATAAC became the standard.

3. Which Machines Use Which

Caterpillar. The 3406B and 3406C used jacket-water aftercooling. With the 3406E, Cat switched the heavy-bore range to air-to-air aftercooling, and the C-series engines that followed — C10 through C18 — kept ATAAC. Cat’s own 3406E service literature tells technicians to check the “air to air aftercooler (if equipped)” for debris when a machine runs hot — even within one engine family the spec varied by application, so confirm by serial.

Komatsu. The PC200-8 — the highest-volume excavator on the used market across Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia — runs an ATAAC core in the cooling package. The OEM part number is 20Y-03-41131, an aluminum core that also fits PC200LC-8, PC210-8K, PC210LC-8K, PC210NLC-8K and PC230NHD-8K. The larger PC290-8K family uses 206-03-22431 (also covers PC220LL-8, PC270-8, PC290LC-8K). Both numbers are confirmed in current aftermarket listings (checked August 2026).

No manual handy? An ATAAC machine has a separate finned core in front of the radiator with a charge-air hose from the turbo; a JWAC machine has no such core — coolant hoses run into the intake area.

4. Signs of a Failing Aftercooler

On mining and earthmoving machines, the number-one killer of ATAAC cores is mud and dust packing between the fins — a machine on a laterite or decomposed-granite site can lose half its airflow in a season. Fins crushed by a careless pressure washer are second. Check the core whenever the radiator is off and wash with low-pressure water in the fin direction.

5. Repair vs Replace, and What to Specify

ATAAC cores are aluminum extrusions with brazed tanks — they are replaced, not repaired. A blocked core can sometimes be cleaned and returned to service; a leaking, crushed or badly plugged core goes out. Jacket-water units can in principle be re-cored, but on old machines the labor rarely beats a replacement unit.
