2. Diagnosing: Test the Fan Before You Replace It

Do not order on a guess — a blocked radiator or slipping belt overheats like a dead fan. Run these checks:

  • Visual inspection: check for cracks at blade roots, bent blades and oil weeping from the clutch body. Any crack means replace — a blade that lets go destroys the radiator.
  • Clutch lockup test (belt-driven fans): with the engine cold, the fan should resist turning. Run to operating temperature, stop, spin by hand — if it freewheels more than two turns, the clutch is not locking and must be replaced.
  • Delta-T check: with the engine at working temperature, check radiator inlet vs outlet with an infrared gun. No temperature drop with a spinning fan means a blocked core, not a dead fan.
  • Hydraulic fan motor flow test: on hydraulic-fan machines, tee a flow meter into the fan circuit. Low flow at correct pump pressure means the motor is bypassing internally — replace it.
