The one-hole side base on the J350 loader nose
On the J350 rung a loader bucket lip can be set up three ways with bolts: from the top, from the side through a single hole per side, or from the side through two. Each one is a different casting and each is a different number, and 3G-5358 is the single-hole side casting. It is printed at 20.4 kg and 213 × 140 × 32–35 mm for the 960, 966, 973 and 977 — the same machine family that carries the top bolt-on 3G-3357 (16.9 kg, 418 × 150 × 38 mm) and the two-hole side base 8E-5358 (26.3 kg, 245 × 180 × 32–35 mm).
The 3.5 kg step from 3G-3357 to 3G-5358 is the cost of bolting through the side instead of the top: the casting has to reach around the lip and carry its own bolt bosses, so it uses more metal for the same nose. The 5.9 kg step up to 8E-5358 is the cost of the second hole. On a 24-point lip that is 84 kg of casting between the top bolt-on and this base, and 141.6 kg between this base and the two-hole casting — weight that travels on every shipment and is bought again on every rebuild.
The J350 teeth it takes
The base does not change the tooth. Every casting on the J350 rung takes the same six profiles, and the profile is where the wear life is decided:
| Profile | Tooth | Weight | A × B × C | Where it earns its money |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard long | 1U-3352 | 6.1 kg | 245 × 102 × 85 mm | Sand, gravel and rehandle on a yard loader |
| Short | 1U-3351 | 5.5 kg | 210 × 99 × 88 mm | Stockpile faces that need penetration |
| Heavy duty long | 9N-4352 | 8.9 kg | 253 × 104.5 × 88 mm | Quarry and aggregate — more wear metal at the point |
| Abrasion | 4T-2353 | 7.1 kg | 278 × 110 × 118 mm | Sand, coal, slag — wear along the body |
| Heavy duty abrasion | 9N-4353-A | 10.5 kg | 260 × 107 × 127 mm | The longest-wearing field tooth on the rung |
| Rock penetration HD | 144-1358 | 12.7 kg | 290 × 110 × 35 mm | Blasted rock and tight faces |
The spread is what matters on a fleet: 144-1358 carries 6.6 kg more wear metal than the 1U-3352 standard long on the same base — 2.08 times the tooth — and 9N-4353-A carries 1.72 times. Fitted to 3G-5358 and pinned with 8E-6358 and retainer 8E-6359, that is the same nose position doing roughly twice the work before the point is gone, which is the difference between a loader that gets 1,800 hours from a set in granite and one that gets 5,000 in a gravel yard.
Where the 3G-5358 sits in the J350 base family
Six castings are published for the J350 loader line, and the number is the only thing that separates them on a quotation:
| Mounting | Number | Weight | Printed size | Machine lines | Fastener |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top bolt-on | 3G-3357 | 16.9 kg | 418 × 150 × 38 mm | 960 / 966 / 970 / 973 / 977 / 972G | Bolt 5P-8361, nut 5P-8362 |
| Top bolt-on | 1U-1357 | 19.8 kg | 430 × 156 × 45 mm | 980 / 983 | Bolt 5P-8361, nut 5P-8362 |
| Side, one hole | 3G-5358 / 3G-5359 | 20.4 kg | 213 × 140 × 32–35 mm | 960 / 966 / 973 / 977 | Bolt 5P-8823, nut 5P-8362 |
| Side, two holes | 8E-5358 / 8E-5359 | 26.3 kg | 245 × 180 × 32–35 mm | 960F / 966F / 970F / 972G / 973 | Bolt 6V-6535, nut 3K-9770 |
| Flush weld-on | 1U-1354 | 13.2 kg | 422 × 96 mm, 32–45 mm weld | 966 / 970 / 980 | Welded to the lip |
| Bottom strap weld-on | 1U-1350 / 1351 / 1352 | 9.5 / 10.2 / 10.2 kg | 390 × 76 mm, 32–45 mm weld | 966 / 970 / 980 | Welded to the lip |
How to confirm you need the one-hole casting
- Photograph one base square on from the side. One hole means 3G-5358; two holes means 8E-5358. This is the whole decision.
- Measure across the strap. Around 140 mm points at this casting (213 mm long); around 180 mm points at the two-hole 245 mm casting.
- Check the machine suffix. 960 / 966 / 973 / 977 plain is printed against this base; the F-suffixed machines are printed against the two-hole casting.
- Send the pin you pulled. J350 teeth run pin 8E-6358 with retainer 8E-6359 (114-0358 / 114-0359). If the pin bore is worn oval, the base is usually replaced with the pin.
- Say which number you are replacing, or send the worn casting. Half-a-second glance at a part number beats any measurement off a photograph.
FAQ
Q: Which loaders take the Cat 3G-5358 adapter?
A: The loader adapter tables print it for Cat 960, 966, 973 and 977 wheel loaders as the side bolt-on base, one hole per side. It is published as a number pair with 3G-5359 on the same 213 × 140 mm casting. The 950, 955 and 963 class runs the shorter J300 side bases 3G-4308 and 3G-8308 instead.
Q: Is 3G-5358 the same base as 8E-5358?
A: No. 3G-5358 is the one-hole side base, 20.4 kg, 213 × 140 × 32–35 mm, printed for 960 / 966 / 973 / 977, on bolt 5P-8823 with nut 5P-8362. 8E-5358 is the two-hole side base, 26.3 kg, 245 × 180 × 32–35 mm, printed for 960F / 966F / 970F / 972G / 973, on bolt 6V-6535 with nut 3K-9770. A single character, 5.9 kg and a different bolt pattern.
Q: Which teeth fit this base?
A: The J350 family — 1U-3352 (6.1 kg), 1U-3351 (5.5 kg), 9N-4352 (8.9 kg), 4T-2353 (7.1 kg), 9N-4353-A (10.5 kg) and 144-1358 (12.7 kg), all on pin 8E-6358 (114-0358) with retainer 8E-6359 (114-0359). Mixing profiles across one lip is normal: standard long in the centre, rock penetration at the corners.
Q: Do the bolts and nuts come with the base?
A: Tell us and we will quote them on the same line. These castings take bolt 5P-8823 with nut 5P-8362. Note that nut 5P-8362 is also used behind the 5P-8361 bolts on the top bolt-on castings, while the two-hole side rows use nut 3K-9770 — so the nut is not implied by the rung and we match both parts to your base number.

Adapter numbers, published weights, printed A × B × C dimensions, machine lines, the bolt and nut pairs and the J350 tooth data on this page are taken from the loader adapter and loader teeth tables of the COHIDREX TRASTEEL TSJ catalogue (metric). 3G-5358 is an aftermarket cross-reference number: Caterpillar and the part numbers referenced are the property of their respective owners and are used here to confirm fitment only. Weights are the catalogued figures — the casting is weighed again before it ships and the weight goes on the packing list.
