The tooth number gets the attention on a bucket order; the pin is what gets forgotten. It arrives as two numbers on the same quotation, and it is the one line where a single digit decides whether the tooth hangs on the nose or sits in a box until somebody finds the right pin. Below are the pin and retainer numbers the replacement catalogue prints for Cat J200 through J350, split by the three pin styles, and the weight each style is carrying.
Three pin rows, one rung letter
The catalogue divides pins by how they hold the tooth, not by machine size. Standard groove pins are the general-purpose line; radius groove pins are what a buyer lands on when the tooth bore is cut for a rounded seat; heavy duty pins are the thick line published against the upper part of the range. All three rows exist on the same page for J200 to J350, so "the pin for a J350" has three answers.
Standard groove pin: J200 to J350
| Rung | Pin | Retainer | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| J200 | 9W-7112 | 4T-0001 | Smallest rung, and the only one on this row with its own retainer number |
| J225 | 6Y-3228 | 3G-9609 | One retainer line covers three rungs — J225, J250 and J300 |
| J250 | 9J-2258 | 3G-9609 | |
| J300 | 9J-2308 | 3G-9609 | |
| J350 | 9J-2358 | 3G-9549 | Retainer changes at the top of the standard range |
The useful detail is the retainer, not the pin. J225, J250 and J300 run the identical retainer 3G-9609 on three different pins, because the pin diameter stays put while the tooth grows from 3.9 lbs to 12.9 lbs. A fleet can stock one retainer line and three pin lines instead of six. The 9W-7112 / 4T-0001 pair at the bottom and the 9J-2358 / 3G-9549 pair at the top are their own animals — neither retainer crosses into the middle of the range.
Radius groove pin: J200 to J350
| Rung | Pin | Retainer | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| J200 | 8E-6208 | 8E-6209 | Same rung as 9W-7112 / 4T-0001 on the standard row |
| J225 | Not printed | 8E-6259 | The pin cell is blank in the catalogue; only the retainer is printed |
| J250 | 8E-6258 | 8E-6259 | One retainer again — J250 and J300 share 8E-6259 |
| J300 | 107-3308 | 8E-6259 | |
| J350 | 8E-6358 | 8E-6359 | The pair most J350 quotations are written on |
The blank J225 cell is the sort of thing that turns into a wrong shipment: the catalogue prints a retainer for J225 on the radius row but no pin, so that one is a question for the factory rather than a number to copy. Note also that the metric book prints the J350 radius pin as 114-0358 with retainer 114-0359 — one pin, two numbers, depending on which book the buyer is reading.
Heavy duty pin: J225 to J350
| Rung | Pin | Retainer | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| J200 | Not printed | Not printed | The heavy duty row starts one rung up |
| J225 | 132-4762 | 149-5733 | Same retainer 149-5733 through J225, J250 and J300 |
| J250 | 132-4763 | 149-5733 | |
| J300 | 132-4766 | 149-5733 | |
| J350 | 114-0358 | 114-0359 | Last three digits step up with the rung: 4762, 4763, 4766, then out of the series |
The heavy duty pins are printed as 132-4762, 132-4763 and 132-4766 for the three middle rungs — the same prefix, one digit apart — and then the J350 breaks the pattern with 114-0358. That break is the reason a hand-written order for "the heavy duty J350 pin" so often comes back as 132-4766. It is the J300 number.
What each pin is carrying
Pin choice follows tooth weight, and the catalogue prints the weights alongside the numbers. Standard short, standard long and heavy duty long, in pounds and converted to kilos:
| Tooth | J200 | J225 | J250 | J300 | J350 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard short | 1U-3201 2.7 lbs / 1.22 kg | 6Y-6221 3.9 lbs / 1.77 kg | 1U-3251 5.6 lbs / 2.54 kg | 1U-3301 9.0 lbs / 4.08 kg | 1U-3351 12.8 lbs / 5.81 kg |
| Standard long | 1U-3202 2.8 lbs / 1.27 kg | 6Y-3222 4.5 lbs / 2.04 kg | 1U-3252 6.2 lbs / 2.81 kg | 1U-3302 9.7 lbs / 4.40 kg | 1U-3352 12.9 lbs / 5.85 kg |
| Heavy duty long | — | 8E-4222 5.8 lbs / 2.63 kg | 9N-4252 7.7 lbs / 3.49 kg | 9N-4302 12.9 lbs / 5.85 kg | 9N-4352 17.6 lbs / 7.98 kg |
Two things follow. First, the tooth grows 4.7 times from the 1U-3201 at 2.7 lbs to the 1U-3351 at 12.8 lbs, and the pin grows with it: 9W-7112 at the bottom, 9J-2358 at the top. Second, the heavy duty long is a real step up: the 9N-4352 at 17.6 lbs against 12.9 lbs for the 1U-3352 on the same J350 rung puts a heavier tooth and a heavier pin line on the same nose, which is what 114-0358 with 114-0359 is ordered for.
On the weights themselves, the metric catalogue prints the same J350 teeth at 6.1 kg for the 1U-3352 and 8.9 kg for the 9N-4352, against 5.85 kg and 7.98 kg converted from the inch book. Both are describing the same casting; we weigh each lot and put the figure on the packing list.
Ordering without a mix-up
- Quote the rung, the tooth number and the base number. The pin is decided by the groove in the tooth and the bore in the adapter — two numbers, not one.
- Order pin and retainer as the printed pair. 3G-9549 does not go behind 8E-6358, and 8E-6359 does not go behind 9J-2358, though all three are listed as J350.
- Say how many points, not how many teeth. Corner castings take their own numbers — see the loader adapter guide.
- Ship pins with the teeth. The freight on a box of pins is nothing next to a stopped loader waiting for a second delivery.
FAQ
Q: Which pin fits a Cat J350 bucket tooth?
A: Three rows are printed for J350, not one. Standard groove is 9J-2358 with retainer 3G-9549; radius groove is 8E-6358 with 8E-6359; heavy duty is 114-0358 with 114-0359, which the metric catalogue also prints as 8E-6358 / 8E-6359 in its J350 row. The groove in the tooth and the bore in the adapter decide which row you are on.
Q: Can a 9J-2358 pin be used in place of an 8E-6358?
A: They are both J350 pins, but they are printed on separate rows with different retainers (3G-9549 against 8E-6359), so their groove and retaining features are not the same. We do not quote them as interchangeable — send a photo of the tooth bore and the pin you pulled and we match the row first.
Q: Why does one retainer cover three tooth sizes?
A: Because three rungs share a pin diameter. Retainer 3G-9609 sits behind pins 6Y-3228, 9J-2258 and 9J-2308 on J225, J250 and J300; retainer 149-5733 sits behind 132-4762, 132-4763 and 132-4766 on the same three rungs in the heavy duty row. One retainer line, three pin lines.
Q: Does the J200 take a heavy duty pin?
A: No. The heavy duty row starts at J225 with 132-4762 and retainer 149-5733, and the J200 cells are blank. J200 runs the standard groove 9W-7112 with 4T-0001 or the radius groove 8E-6208 with 8E-6209, under teeth from 2.7 lbs to 2.8 lbs.

Pin and retainer numbers, tooth numbers and tooth weights on this page are taken from the J-series teeth and pins table of the Black Cat Wear Parts replacement catalogue in our files (inch, lbs). The metric figures quoted for comparison come from the COHIDREX TRASTEEL TSJ catalogue (kg, mm). Caterpillar and the part numbers referenced are the property of their respective owners and are used here for fitment reference only. Where the two catalogues print different weights for the same number, both are shown rather than one being chosen.
