The heaviest centre base on the J350 rung

There are two centre top bolt-on castings published for the J350 nose, and buyers treat them as interchangeable far more often than the numbers deserve. 1U-1357 is the heavy one: 430 mm long, 156 mm wide, 45 mm deep, on a 1.75 in plate, printed against the 980-class loaders. 3G-3357 is the light one: 418 × 150 × 38 mm on a 1.50 in plate, printed across the 966 to 977 line. Both take the J350 teeth and both bolt through the same 5P-8361 with the same 5P-8362 nut.

The difference is 12 mm of length, 6 mm of width and 6.3 mm of plate — which does not sound like much until it is multiplied by a lip. A 24-point bucket is 24 castings, and at the metric catalogue figures (19.8 kg against 16.9 kg) that is 2.9 kg per point, 69.6 kg on the bucket, and 69.6 kg that has to be paid for on every rebuild.

The weight the two books print

One thing worth stating plainly, because it comes up in arguments with buyers comparing catalogues: the replacement books in our files do not agree with each other on the neighbouring casting. Metric catalogue, 3G-3357 at 16.9 kg. Inch catalogue, the same number at 43.3 lbs, which converts to 19.64 kg. That is a 2.7 kg spread on one casting, and it changes the story completely — if 19.64 kg is right, the step from 3G-3357 to 1U-1357 is 0.2 kg, not 2.9 kg.

On 1U-1357 itself there is no argument: 19.8 kg metric and 43.7 lbs inch, which is 19.82 kg. The same holds for 6I-9898 up the road, where the metric book says 27.5 kg and the inch book says 63.2 lbs (28.67 kg) — a 1.2 kg gap that we flag rather than smooth over. Every casting we ship is weighed on our own scale and the figure goes on the packing list, so the quotation and the crate agree.

The corner castings are the number most often left off an order. 1U-1358 and 1U-1359 are the right-hand and left-hand corner bases for the same 980-class lip, at 57.0 lbs (25.85 kg) each — 6 kg more metal than the centre base, because the corner has to wrap the edge of the lip as well as carry the tooth. A complete 24-point lip needs two corners and 22 centres, and the two corners are not interchangeable with each other.

The J350 teeth this base carries

The base does not choose the tooth; the ground does. All six J350 profiles mount on 1U-1357, and the spread between them is the whole argument for keeping more than one profile on the shelf:

Teeth are pinned with 8E-6358 and retainer 8E-6359 — printed in the metric book as 114-0358 and 114-0359 — while the standard groove row for the same rung is 9J-2358 with 3G-9549. The pin travels with the tooth, so ordering teeth without pins is the fastest way to have a bucket sit on the ground for a week. The full pin and retainer table for the rung is in the J200 to J350 pin guide.

How to confirm the casting before you order

  • Measure the plate. 1.75 in (44.4 mm) points at 1U-1357; 1.50 in (38.1 mm) points at 3G-3357. A caliper on the side of the base settles it faster than any machine serial.
  • Measure across the top. 430 mm is this casting; 418 mm is 3G-3357. The 12 mm shows up clearly on a tape.
  • Count the holes. One bolt through the top per base means the centre castings; two holes through the side means you want the side-pin family instead — see the bolt-on and side-pin adapter guide.
  • Say centre or corner. Two corners and twenty-two centres is a complete 24-point lip, and the corners are 1U-1358 / 1U-1359.
  • Send the worn casting or the number off it. A photo of the part number cast into the base beats every measurement taken off a machine in the yard.

FAQ

Q: Which loaders take the Cat 1U-1357 adapter?
A: The inch catalogue prints 980C, 980F, 977 and 973C against this row; the metric catalogue prints 980 and 983. Both place it as the centre top bolt-on base in the J350 group at 19.8 kg. A 966 or a 970 is more likely to be on 3G-3357, which is the same function on a thinner plate.

Q: Is 1U-1357 the same as 3G-3357?
A: No. Both are centre top bolt-on bases on the J350 nose taking the same teeth and the same 5P-8361 bolt, but 1U-1357 is 430 × 156 × 45 mm on a 1.75 in plate and 3G-3357 is 418 × 150 × 38 mm on a 1.50 in plate. The metric book prints 19.8 kg against 16.9 kg; the inch book prints 43.7 lbs (19.82 kg) against 43.3 lbs (19.64 kg), so we weigh every lot and put the figure on the packing list.

Q: Which teeth and pins fit it?
A: The full J350 family — 1U-3352 (6.1 kg), 1U-3351 (5.5 kg), 9N-4352 (8.9 kg), 4T-2353 (7.1 kg), 9N-4353-A (10.5 kg), 144-1358 (12.7 kg) — on pin 8E-6358 (114-0358) with retainer 8E-6359 (114-0359), or 9J-2358 with 3G-9549 if the tooth is cut for the standard groove pin.

Q: Bolts or weld?
A: Bolts — 5P-8361 with nut 5P-8362, 1.25 in (31.8 mm) diameter, the same hardware printed against 3G-3357 and 6I-9898. The weld-on options on this nose are 1U-1354 (flush) and 1U-1350 / 1351 / 1352 (bottom strap). Bolt and nut can be quoted on the same line as the casting.
