A customer asking for "Cat J teeth" is asking about a size system, not a tooth. J250 and J300 tips look identical in a photo, weigh twice as much as a J200 tip in the catalogue, and neither will sit on the other's adapter nose. So the two questions worth answering before a container is packed are always the same: which rung of the ladder, and which profile on that rung. Both answers are sitting in the part numbers if you know how to read them.
1. The Ladder, Rung by Rung
The weights below are the published figures from Black Cat's Cat J-series catalogue (215.1025), converted at 1 lb = 0.4536 kg. Where a profile is missing from that catalogue's row, it is missing here as well — we do not fill gaps with guesses.
| Series | Standard short | Standard long (published weight) | Heavy duty long (published weight) | Other profiles in the family |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| J200 | 1U-3201 (2.7 lb) | 1U-3202 — 2.8 lb / 1.27 kg | — | 8E-2184 bolt-on loader adapter, 5.20 lb |

| J450 | 9W-8451 (23.6 lb) | 9W-8452 — 25.6 lb / 11.61 kg | 9N-4452 — 35.9 lb / 16.28 kg | 9W-8459 penetration (21.8 lb), 159-0459 (33.3 lb), J450RC (31.3 lb), J450TIGER (29.4 lb), 1U-3452WTL twin tiger |
| J550 | 9W-8551 (32.8 lb) | 9W-8552 — 40.8 lb / 18.51 kg | 9N-4552 — 59.9 lb / 27.17 kg | 159-0559 (53.2 lb), 9W-8559 (35.3 lb), 7I-7609 (61.7 lb), J550RC (49.7 lb), J550WN (29.0 lb), J550HDAL (73.9 lb) |
| J600 | — | 6I-6602 — 77.3 lb / 35.06 kg | 159-0607 — 84.9 lb / 38.51 kg | J600RC (85.5 lb), J600VX (75.4 lb), J600TIGER (78.6 lb), J600TWIN (85.1 lb), J600HDAL (130.0 lb) |
| J700 | — | 4T-4702 — 97.3 lb / 44.13 kg | 171-1709 — 110.1 lb / 49.94 kg | J700VX (87.7 lb), J700HDAL (154.2 lb) |
| J800 | — | 7Y-0602 — 101.0 lb / 45.81 kg | 135-9800 — 202.4 lb / 91.81 kg | J800VX (124.9 lb), J800HDAL (206.6 lb), 6I-8804 weld-on 2-strap loader adapter 209.2 lb |
Two things worth noticing in that table. First, weight does not decide the series: the J600 standard long point is 77.3 lb while the J600 abrasion profile of the same series is 130.0 lb — heavier than the J700 standard point at 97.3 lb, and the two still do not interchange. Second, the abrasion profiles at the top end are enormous: the J800 heavy duty abrasion point is 202.4 lb / 91.8 kg, twice the standard point in the same series. If your enquiry says "J800 teeth" without a profile, the answer can be off by 100 lb a piece.
2. The Same Letter, Two Different Teeth
This is the part of the J-series that catches out buyers who order from a machine model. The same series letter is used for an excavator point and for a loader point, and they are different castings with different numbers, lengths and weights. TRASTEEL's TSJ catalogue prints both columns for each series; we have put the standard long loader point beside the penetration excavator point so the gap is visible:
| Series | Loader profile (number, dimensions, weight) | Excavator penetration profile (number, dimensions, weight) |
|---|---|---|
| J200 | 1U-3202 — 160 × 59 × 56 mm, 1.4 kg | 1U-3209 — 144 × 59 × 18 mm, 1.4 kg |
| J250 | 1U-3252 — 210 × 80 × 81 mm, 3.5 kg | 9J-4259 — 200 × 80 × 25 mm, 2.8 kg |
| J300 | 1U-3302 — 242 × 92 × 92 mm, 5.2 kg | 9J-4309 — 230 × 92 × 28 mm, 4.2 kg |
| J350 | 1U-3352 — 265 × 106 × 98 mm, 6.5 kg | 9J-4359 — 262 × 106 × 32 mm, 5.8 kg |
| J400 | 7T-3402 — 295 × 119 × 114 mm, 10.6 kg | 6Y-7409 — 290 × 119 × 37 mm, 9.0 kg |
| J450 | 9W-8452 — 314 × 135 × 118 mm, 12.3 kg | 9W-8459 — 315 × 135 × 40 mm, 11.2 kg |
| J550 | 9W-8552 — 360 × 156 × 142 mm, 19.6 kg | 9W-8559 — 360 × 156 × 52 mm, 15.8 kg |
| J600 | 6I-6602 — 400 × 193 × 170 mm, 30 kg | 7I-7609 — 410 × 193 × 58 mm, 29.3 kg |
Read the third figure in each cell. A J400 loader point is printed 114 mm deep at the adapter end; the excavator penetration point in the same series is 37 mm. That depth is the load-bearing body that wraps the nose, and it is why a loader point bolted onto an excavator bucket will not dig the way the old one did, and why an excavator penetration point on a wheel loader disappears in a season. Same pin, same adapter family, different job.
The heavy duty excavator profiles go the other way again — longer and thicker: TRASTEEL prints the J350 HD penetration point (168-1359, also sold as 1U-3352RC) at 284 × 107 × 52 mm / 7.5 kg, the J400 one (168-1409) at 320 × 124 × 62 mm / 11 kg, and the J450 one (159-0459) at 350 × 140 × 73 mm / 14.6 kg.
3. Pins and Retainers, Series by Series
Retention hardware travels with the series, not with the profile, and the two catalogues we cross-checked agree on most rows. These are their published numbers:
| Series | Pin | Retainer | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| J200 | 8E-6208 | 8E-6209 | Our published wear chart gives J200 an 11 mm pin, 61 mm long, 22 mm retainer |
| J225 | 6Y-3228 (also 132-4762) | 8E-6259 (also 133-0699) | TRASTEEL prints this row as J220 with the same hardware |
| J250 | 8E-6258 (also 132-4763) | 8E-6259 (also 133-0699) | 14 mm pin, 78 mm long per our wear chart |
| J300 | 9J-2308 (also 132-4766) | 8E-6259 (also 133-0699) | 14 mm pin, 92 mm long |
| J350 | 8E-6358 (also 114-0358) | 8E-6359 (also 114-0359) | 19 mm pin, 108 mm long; matches our 1U-3352 page |
| J400 | 7T-3408 (also 116-7408) | 7T-3409 (Black Cat) or 8E-8409 (TRASTEEL) | The two catalogues disagree; our wear chart gives J400 a 22 mm pin, 119 mm long, 42 mm retainer |
| J450 | 1U-1558 or 8E-0468 (also 114-0468) | 3G-9559 or 8E-0469 / 8E-8469 (also 107-3469) | Black Cat prints both groove systems and tags the 8E- and 114- numbers "(460)" |
| J550 | 6Y-8558 (also 107-3378) | 8E-5559 (also 107-8559) | Both catalogues agree |
| J600 | 6I-6608 (also 113-9608) | 6I-6609 (also 113-9609) | Both catalogues agree |
| J700 | 4T-4708 (also 9U-9616 / 113-4708) | 4T-4707 (also 113-1809) | Both catalogues agree |
| J800 | 102-0101 (also 134-1808) | 101-2874 (also 134-1809) | Both catalogues agree |
The J400 retainer row is the useful one. If a supplier quotes you 8E-8409 for a J400 tooth and your old retainer is stamped 7T-3409, you are not being sold a wrong part — you are being sold the other catalogue's answer, and both are sold into the same buckets. Ask for the pin number as a pair with the tip number and the ambiguity disappears. The 7T-3408 pin also appears in Doosan cross-reference rows, which we cover in our DH300 / DX300 guide — a Caterpillar J400 pin number sitting in a Doosan parts table is a catalogue habit, not a fitment.
4. The J450 / J460 Label Trap
One size on this ladder carries two names in the aftermarket, and it is the size most often ordered by letter. Black Cat files 9W-8451, 9W-8452, 9N-4452, 159-0459 and the rest of the family under J450 — then prints the pin and retainer alternatives 8E-0468, 8E-0469, 114-0468 and 107-3469 with a "(460)" tag beside them, and files its 2-strap weld-on loader adapter for the same tooth size, 114-0464 (41.5 lb / 18.8 kg, 988 / 980 / 973, 2.00 in strap), under J460. TRASTEEL files the tooth, the pin group and the base all under J450. So "send me J460 teeth" and "send me J450 teeth" can be two descriptions of the same casting, and the only reliable order line is the part number plus the pin.
5. Loader Buckets: the Bolt-On Adapters
On excavators the adapter is welded on; on wheel loaders the J-series also runs bolt-on adapters, and those numbers decide what you can fit without cutting steel. Black Cat's published bolt-on loader adapter rows:
| Adapter | Position | Series | Published weight | Bolt diameter | Bucket family |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6I-9898 | Centre | J400 | 63.2 lb / 28.7 kg | 1.75 in | 980G, 980H, 980F, 980C |
| 6I-8243 / 6I-8244 | Corner RH / LH | J400 | 77.9 lb / 35.3 kg | 1.75 in | 980G, 980F |
| 1U-1357 | Centre | J350 | 43.7 lb / 19.8 kg | 1.75 in | 980C, 980F, 977, 973C |
| 3G-3357 | Centre | J350 | 43.3 lb / 19.6 kg | 1.50 in | 977, 973, 972, 970, 966, 963, 962, 960 |
| 1U-0307 | Centre | J300 | 28.5 lb / 12.9 kg | 1.00 in | 966C, 229, 225, E240 |
| 4T-4307 | Centre | J300 | 30.9 lb / 14.0 kg | 1.25 in | 977, 973, 970, 966, 960 |
| 1U-0257 | Centre | J250 | 22.5 lb / 10.2 kg | 1.00 in | 963, 962, 960, 955, 950, 903 and smaller |
| 8E-2184 | Centre | J200 | 5.20 lb / 2.36 kg | 0.875 in | 438, 436, 428, 426, 416 |
The pattern is worth remembering: the J250 system that carries a 2.8 kg excavator tip needs a 10.2 kg adapter on a 963-class loader, and the J400 system that carries a 9.4 kg excavator tip needs a 28.7 kg centre adapter on a 980. If you are quoting teeth for a loader, quote the adapter class too — a loader that has been rebuilt with the wrong adapter will eat pins whichever tip you fit.
6. What to Send Us
- The part number on the tooth — 7T-3402 or 9W-8452 or 1U-3352, not just "J series".
- The pin and retainer numbers, or the caliper readings: diameter and length to the millimetre.
- The machine and bucket — a 320D-class excavator bucket and a 980-class loader bucket can both be "J400", with different adapters.
- The ground — rock, mixed or dirt — so we quote the profile rather than the standard point.
We stock the J200 to J800 ladder as aftermarket castings with pins and retainers as one line item, and we will confirm the adapter nose class from a photo before the teeth ship.
FAQ
Q: What are the Cat J-series bucket tooth sizes?
A: J200, J225, J250, J300, J350, J400, J450, J550, J600, J700 and J800. The letter-number is the system size — pin, retainer and adapter nose — and the part number inside the family is the profile: standard short 7T-3401, standard long 7T-3402, heavy duty long 8E-4402, penetration 6Y-7409 in the J400 family.
Q: Is a 9W-8452 a J450 or a J460 tooth?
A: Both labels are used for the same size. Black Cat files the family under J450 and tags the alternative pin and retainer numbers "(460)", then files the 2-strap weld-on loader adapter for the same size (114-0464) under J460; TRASTEEL files all of it under J450. Order by part number and pin.
Q: Which pin and retainer does a J400 tooth take?
A: Pin 7T-3408 (also 116-7408) in both catalogues. The retainer splits: 7T-3409 (also 116-7409) from Black Cat, 8E-8409 (also 166-7409) from TRASTEEL. Our wear chart prints a 22 mm pin, 119 mm long, 42 mm retainer for J400.
Q: Why is the same J-series tooth a different weight in two catalogues?
A: Because "J350 tooth" names a family, not a casting. The standard long J350 point is published at 12.9 lb / 5.85 kg while the loader profile in TRASTEEL for the same series is 6.5 kg, and inside one series the profiles spread further: J800 standard long is 101 lb / 45.8 kg and J800 HDAL is 202.4 lb / 91.8 kg.
