The heavy duty long point on the J300 rung
A Cat 950 or 962 loader runs the J300 nose. On that nose the catalogue prints six profiles, and the 9N-4302 is the heavy duty long — the one a rehandling yard or an aggregate plant orders when the standard long point is being changed too often. Same base, same pin, same retainer as the standard long tooth; the difference is 1.5 kg of extra metal per point.
If the machine in front of you is a 926 or a 936, this is the wrong rung — that class takes J250. If it is a 966, it takes J350. The loader ladder is set by class, not by the loader badge or the bucket size.
The six J300 loader profiles
| Profile | Number | Weight | A × B × C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard long | 1U-3302 | 4.1 kg | 220 × 88 × 73 mm |
| Short | 1U-3301 | 4.1 kg | 195 × 88 × 76 mm |
| Heavy duty long | 9N-4302 | 5.6 kg | 223 × 91.5 × 69 mm |
| Abrasion | 4T-2303 | 5.2 kg | 243 × 96 × 105 mm |
| Heavy duty abrasion | 9N-4303 | 7.3 kg | 230 × 92 × 108 mm |
| Rock penetration HD | 135-9300 | 8.3 kg | 250 × 88 × 30 mm |
All six take the same pin and retainer, so choosing between them is a wear question rather than a fitment question. Standard long for clean rehandle; heavy duty long for mixed gravel and dirt; abrasion where the material is sand, coal or slag; heavy duty abrasion for the longest life in the same material; rock penetration HD where the point has to bite into blasted rock instead of sliding over it.
Two bases are printed on the 9N-4302 row
The catalogue pairs this tooth with two weld-on castings. Both are welded to the lip — the difference is where the weld goes and how much of the base sits above the floor of the bucket:
| Base | Mounting | Weight | A × B × C | Printed machines |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1U-1304 | Flush weld-on | 8 kg | 356 × 71 mm | 950 / 962 |
| 9J-8929 | Bottom strap weld-on | 6.8 kg | 230 × 65 × 25 mm | 950 / 962 |
A bolt-on base is also published for the same 950 / 955 / 960 / 963 line — 4T-4307, 13.2 kg, 405 × 160 × 32 mm, held by bolts and nuts rather than by weld. That is the row that decides how a rebuild is planned: a bolt-on base can be changed in a yard without cutting the bucket, a weld-on base cannot. Send the number stamped on the base still on the lip, or a photograph of it, and the order is built around what is actually on the machine.
What 1.5 kg per point means on freight
The published gap between the standard long 1U-3302 and the heavy duty long 9N-4302 is 1.5 kg per tooth:
| Order | 1U-3302 (standard long) | 9N-4302 (heavy duty long) | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 point | 4.1 kg | 5.6 kg | +1.5 kg |
| 20 points (1 set) | 82 kg | 112 kg | +30 kg |
| 40 points (2 sets) | 164 kg | 224 kg | +60 kg |
On a 40-point order that is 60 kg — one extra carton on a pallet, not a second pallet, and it is recovered the first time the points last an extra shift. It becomes a real number on a container: 400 points of heavy duty long are 2,240 kg against 1,640 kg for the standard long, and the container plan has to know which one it is carrying before the book rate is quoted.
What to send with the enquiry
- Machine — 950, 950H, 962H, 960F: the letter matters less than the series, but send both.
- Tooth number — 9N-4302 if the old tooth still stamps it, otherwise the weight in kilos and the A dimension in millimetres, which separates 1U-3302 (220 mm) from 9N-4302 (223 mm) from 1U-3301 (195 mm).
- Base number and mounting — 1U-1304, 9J-8929 or the bolt-on row; if the base number is gone, send the strap thickness and the pocket opening.
- Quantity per bucket and number of buckets — including how many are corner points, which are the first to wear on a loader lip.
- Pin — the old pin, or its diameter and length in millimetres. A J250 pin (8E-6258) does not fit a J300 base.
FAQ
Q: Which machines take the 9N-4302?
A: The J300 loader class — Cat 950, 955, 960, 962 and 963. It fits any J300 base, so the machine badge alone is not enough to quote from.
Q: What base does the 9N-4302 need?
A: 1U-1304 (flush weld-on, 8 kg, 356 × 71 mm) or 9J-8929 (bottom strap weld-on, 6.8 kg, 230 × 65 × 25 mm), both printed for the 950 and 962; 4T-4307 (13.2 kg) is the bolt-on option published for the 950 / 955 / 960 / 963 line.
Q: Is the 9N-4302 the same as the 1U-3302?
A: No. Same rung, same base, different casting — 4.1 kg against 5.6 kg, and the extra metal is in the body of the tooth rather than in its outline.
Q: What pin and retainer hold it?
A: Pin 9J-2308 (132-4766) with retainer 8E-6259 (133-0699). J250 uses the same retainer but a different pin — 8E-6258.
