Three Numbers, Three Fuel Systems

Ask five suppliers for "the fuel filter for a 320" and you can collect three different part numbers, all of them real. The reason is that the 320 has been three machines under one name, and Caterpillar designs filtration around the engine and the fuel module, not around the model decal.

The 320D is the C6.4 ACERT six-cylinder machine. Its fuel filter is 1R-0751, a 2-micron advanced-efficiency spin-on with a 7/8"-14 UN thread, quoted in aftermarket specification sheets at roughly 85.7–86 mm outside diameter and 181.5–182 mm overall height, crossing Fleetguard FF5324 and Baldwin BF7632. Upstream of it sits the 326-1644 fuel/water separator — the first page of the same story.

The 320D2 replaced the C6.4 with the C4.4 ACERT four-cylinder, and its fuel element is 1R-1804, quoted at about 76–77 mm diameter and 156–158 mm height with 438-5386 as the matching separator element. The same machine's engine oil filter changed form as well, from the spin-on 1R-0739 on the 320D to the cartridge 322-3155 on the 320D2.

The third number is where most wrong deliveries are born. Caterpillar's parts store lists 360-8960 — a cartridge element, 3.209 in (81.5 mm) diameter by 6.102 in (155 mm) long, flow out-to-in — against the 320D2, 320D2 GC, 320D2 FM, 320D3 GC, 320 GC, 320D GC, 320D and 320D L, and against the 320E, 320F L, 312D to 319D, 323D L, 323E, 324E, 325F, 326D2, 329E, 330D2, 333, 335F, 336D2 and 340D2 L. It also appears across D1 to D6 dozers, 953 and 963 track loaders, 924K to 966F wheel loaders, 415F2 to 450F backhoe loaders, telehandlers, compactors, graders, and C4.4, C6.6 and C7.1 industrial, marine and generator engines.

What You Can See Without a Parts Book

Because Cat's own data carries two current elements against 320D2 machines, a part number by itself will not settle the question — but a look inside the filter head will. The two element types are physically incompatible, and the difference is visible from a metre away.

One practical warning that goes with the table: the 320D2 was built with more than one engine over its production life. The standard machine runs the C4.4 ACERT four-cylinder, and the 2017 320D2 / 320D2 L builds sold against Brazil's MAR-1 standard run a C7.1. Fuel filtration follows the engine and the fuel module, so "it is a 320D2" settles less than most buyers expect. The serial prefix stamped on the PIN plate, plus the element you remove, settles it completely.

The Separator Is the Second Half of the Service

Every one of these three systems is a two-element job. The fuel filter catches fine particles; a separate water separator element coalesces water and takes out the heavier sediment before it reaches the element — and on machines working in West Africa, the Gulf or the Andes, running on drum fuel of uncertain quality, the separator is the part doing the hardest work. Cat lists the 479-4131 and 479-4133 separator elements alongside 360-8960 for the same reason it lists 326-1644 with 1R-0751 and 438-5386 with 1R-1804.

Ordering "the fuel filter" twice is the pattern we see most: two primary elements in the store and a separator that has not been touched in a year. The Three Mistakes That Reach Us

Ordering by model name. "320 fuel filter" is the most expensive search phrase in this article. The 320D, 320D GC, 320D L, 320D2, 320D2 GC, 320D2 L, 320D3 GC, 320 GC, 320E and 320F L all appear in Cat's lists, in more than one combination, and none of them is interchangeable with the next.

Cross numbers treated as guarantees. A cross number is a lead for a quotation, nothing more. Fleetguard FS20009 and Perkins 26560201 stand behind 1R-1804 in several independent listings, but Donaldson, Baldwin, MANN and WIX numbers for the same element appear in a single listing each — which is why we label them as unverified on our product pages rather than printing them as facts.

Changing one element of a pair. Whether it is fuel plus separator or primary plus safety air element, replacing half a pair leaves the worn half in the machine. That is the machine that comes back with the same complaint.
