If you run a jaw crusher, jaw plates are one of your biggest recurring wear costs. Two operators with the same crusher model can get very different life from their plates โ€” and the difference is almost never the plates themselves. It comes down to a handful of factors you can actually control or at least plan around.

1. The Material You Crush

The single biggest influence on jaw plate life is the feed itself. Hard, abrasive rock such as granite and basalt wears plates far faster than soft limestone. Wet or clayey material is a different problem: it packs into the crushing chamber, increases pressure on the plates and accelerates wear on the lower section. Feed size matters too โ€” feeding oversized rock forces the plates to do work they were not designed for, and oversized lumps can crack plates outright. Keep the feed size within the crusher's recommended range.

2. Manganese Grade and Crusher Settings

Most jaw plates are cast from high-manganese steel, which work-hardens under impact: the surface becomes harder as it is hammered, which is exactly the wear resistance you want. Plates with higher manganese content generally suit hard, high-impact rock, while lower-alloy grades can be a better match for softer, more abrasive feed. Choosing a grade that matches your material is more effective than simply buying the "strongest" plate.

Crusher settings also play a role. A tight closed-side setting increases the crushing force on every stroke and wears plates faster; an excessively wide setting reduces output quality. Running the crusher at the right speed, keeping the chamber evenly fed, and never running it empty or choked all extend plate life. Small operating habits โ€” like turning plates end-for-end once at the halfway wear point โ€” can effectively give you a second life from the same set.

3. When to Turn or Replace Plates

Wear is rarely even: the lower part of the jaw typically wears faster than the top. Check plates regularly and look for worn teeth, a smooth glossy surface, or a visible reduction in profile. The time to act is before the plate is worn through to the backing โ€” running a plate until it fails risks damage to the crusher body itself, which is a far bigger repair than a new set of plates.
