Excavator Bucket Teeth Buying Guide: Types, Materials & Fitment

Bucket teeth are the most frequently replaced wear part on an excavator. They take the full force of digging, yet choosing the right set is often treated as an afterthought. Order the wrong profile or the wrong pin size, and you lose a week of downtime and freight costs. This guide covers the three things that matter most: tooth type, material and fitment.

1. Know the Tooth Types

Teeth are designed around the ground they will meet. The three most common profiles are:

• Standard teeth — the everyday workhorse for general digging, trenching and mixed soils. A balanced profile that digs well and wears evenly.
• Rock teeth — thicker, heavier profiles with a blunt tip, built for blasted rock, quarries and highly abrasive ground. They give up some penetration in exchange for much longer wear life in severe conditions.
• Tiger / penetration teeth — a sharp, chisel-like profile that bites into hard-packed or frozen ground quickly. Excellent penetration, but they wear faster in abrasive material.

Many operators keep two sets on site and swap according to the job — a standard set for general work and a rock set for quarry and demolition days.

2. Understand the Material

Most quality aftermarket teeth are cast from high-manganese steel (commonly referred to as Mn13 / Mn18 grades). Manganese steel has a valuable property called work hardening: the surface becomes harder the more it is impacted, while the core stays tough and resistant to cracking. This is exactly what a digging tooth needs.

Some budget teeth are made from lower-grade carbon steel that simply wears away quickly or breaks on impact — a false economy once you count labour, downtime and freight. A good aftermarket tooth is through-hardened during production and delivered with consistent hardness across the working surface. When comparing quotes, ask what steel grade the teeth are cast from rather than comparing price alone.

3. Get the Fitment Right (OEM Numbers and Pin Sizes)

Bucket teeth are not universal. A tooth fits a specific adapter (the nose welded to the bucket edge), and adapters vary by brand, model and generation. Two things determine compatibility:

• Adapter system — the shape of the nose and how the tooth locks on. Common systems include pin-on (a drive pin or cotter pin through the tooth) and bolt-on designs. You must match the tooth to the adapter system already on your bucket.
• Pin size and spacing — the diameter of the retaining pin and the position of the pin hole must match the adapter exactly.

The reliable way to order is by OEM part number or by your machine model plus bucket type. For example, teeth for CAT 320, 325 and 330 series buckets, Komatsu PC200/PC300 and Hitachi ZX200/ZX330 all use different adapters — a good supplier will ask for the machine model and adapter style before quoting. If you can measure the adapter nose or photograph the old tooth with a ruler in the frame, that removes all guesswork.

4. Wear Life and When to Replace

Wear life depends on the material being dug, the operator's technique, and how the machine is used. Teeth should be replaced when the working tip is heavily worn — running teeth until they are almost gone risks damaging the adapter nose itself, which is far more expensive to replace than a tooth. Rotate or replace teeth in complete sets so the bucket digs evenly, and check retaining pins regularly so a loose tooth does not come off mid-job.

5. Buying Advice

• Buy from a supplier who asks about your machine model and adapter — that is the sign of someone who cares about fitment.
• Order matched sets plus a couple of spares; bucket teeth are heavy and freight per tooth is disproportionately high.
• Ask about the steel grade and whether the teeth are through-hardened.
• Keep your adapter type and OEM numbers on file so reordering takes one message.
