When you buy a forklift — new or used — the power source is the first decision to make. Electric, diesel and LPG machines all do the same basic job of lifting and moving loads, but they behave very differently in terms of running cost, working environment, emissions and maintenance. This short guide breaks down the practical differences so you can match the machine to your operation.

1. Electric Forklifts: Clean and Quiet Indoors

Electric forklifts run on battery power, produce no exhaust fumes and are quiet enough for indoor work. They are the standard choice for warehouses, cold storage and food or pharmaceutical facilities where air quality matters. Running costs are lower per hour than diesel or LPG, and maintenance is simpler — no engine oil, filters or fuel system to service. The trade-offs are the upfront battery and charger cost, the need for charging time between shifts, and a lower power-to-weight ratio for the heaviest outdoor work. If your operation runs multiple shifts, plan for spare batteries or opportunity charging.

2. Diesel Forklifts: Power for the Toughest Outdoor Work

Diesel machines deliver the highest power and torque, which is why they dominate ports, steel yards, timber yards and construction sites. They handle heavy loads, long ramps and rough ground that strain electric trucks, and refueling is quick. The downsides are exhaust emissions and noise — diesel units are not suitable for enclosed spaces without proper ventilation — plus higher day-to-day running costs and more regular servicing of the engine and fuel system. For rough terrain work, look for a dedicated rough-terrain diesel forklift with larger pneumatic tires.

3. LPG Forklifts: The Flexible Middle Ground

LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) forklifts burn much cleaner than diesel, so they are widely used in indoor-outdoor operations like building material yards, warehouses with loading docks and manufacturing plants. An LPG truck can be used inside with adequate ventilation and outside without the charging downtime of an electric unit — you simply swap the gas cylinder. They offer good power for the price, and gas cylinders are easy to source in most regions. The main considerations are fuel handling, slightly higher maintenance than electric, and lower power than a comparable diesel for the very heaviest applications.

4. How to Decide for Your Operation

  • Where will it work? Indoors and enclosed: electric first, LPG with ventilation second. Outdoor heavy duty: diesel. Mixed indoor-outdoor: LPG is often the practical pick.
  • What loads and duty cycle? Continuous heavy lifting over long shifts favors diesel or LPG; stop-and-go light work suits electric.
  • What is your fuel and parts supply? Check the local availability of gas refills, battery charging infrastructure and spare parts — a machine is only as useful as the support around it.
  • New or used? A well-maintained used forklift from a supplier that inspects and services each unit before shipping can cut your starting costs significantly, whichever power source you choose.
