Some cylinders also carry a buffer or cushion seal inside the end caps, so kits differ between manufacturers and between cylinder positions. 2. Why You Replace the Whole Set — Not One Seal

The most common story we hear: a technician changes only the rod seal that was visibly leaking, and six weeks later the cylinder leaks again — this time through the piston seal that failed under the same age and heat. Seals in one cylinder work together and age together: heat, compression set and fluid contamination degrade every element at roughly the same rate. Opening a cylinder costs the same labour once, so standard workshop practice is to fit the complete kit while it is apart. Rebuilding the rod seal alone means paying the teardown and refit cost twice, plus the downtime twice — and on a machine earning its keep, downtime is the expensive half.

When you see these symptoms, the diagnosis is usually the seals rather than the iron:

  • Oil on the rod or dripping from the gland — rod seal and wiper are the suspects; check the rod surface for scoring first.
  • The bucket or boom settles when the machine is off — piston seal bypass, oil leaking across the piston inside the barrel.
  • Cylinder works but "jumps" or creeps — usually worn piston seals and wear rings together.

3. Finding the Right Kit: Stamped Number First, Measurements Second

The number stamped on the cylinder barrel or gland is the single most reliable way to buy a seal kit. OEM cylinders carry a part number or a kit number that a supplier can cross-reference directly to the correct seals. This matters because the same machine model changed cylinder numbers across production years — an early Cat 320D boom cylinder is not automatically the same seals as a late 320D2 — so ordering by machine model alone is how wrong kits happen.

If the stamping is worn off, the fallback is measurements, taken in millimetres:

  • Bore diameter — the inside of the barrel.
  • Rod diameter — measured with calipers on the clean, un-scored section.
  • Stroke length — from fully closed to fully extended, or the difference between pin-centre distances.
  • Gland outside diameter and pin-centre distance, for mounting confirmation.

4. Buying Seal Kits from China Without Getting It Wrong

Seal kits are a low-cost, high-turnover line — but a wrong kit costs a teardown, not just the part price. The exporters who ship seals properly do five things, and it is worth checking all of them before you order:

  • Confirm the kit against your cylinder, not your machine model. You send the number from the barrel or the measurements; they confirm the match in writing before payment. If a supplier quotes from "PC200-8 boom cylinder" alone, walk away.
  • Quote honestly on material. Seals are made in different compounds for temperature and fluid compatibility, and a quality aftermarket kit cross-referenced to the OEM number typically runs 30–60% below OEM list for the same fitment — a price far below that band means thinner material, not a bargain.
