Custom hydraulic cylinder — specification and ordering guide

Excavators, loaders, forklifts and dozens of other machines run on hydraulic cylinders, and sooner or later every fleet needs a cylinder that is no longer listed as a standard spare — a special stroke for an attachment, an odd mounting style, or a machine so old that the OEM no longer stocks the part. That is where a custom hydraulic cylinder comes in. China's hydraulic cylinder manufacturers supply made-to-order cylinders to equipment owners, workshops and distributors worldwide, and the process is straightforward once you know what to specify. The difference between a smooth order and a costly mismatch is almost always the information you provide at the start.

1. Start with the Machine, Not the Drawing

A custom hydraulic cylinder has to do two things: fit the machine and do the job. Before anything else, send your machine brand, model and serial number, plus the OEM part number of the original cylinder if you can read it on the nameplate. Then measure the cylinder itself — or send clear photos with a ruler in the frame. The engineer needs five numbers above all:

  • Bore diameter — the inside diameter of the barrel, which determines the force the cylinder can produce.
  • Rod diameter — the piston rod thickness, which determines the pulling force and stiffness.
  • Stroke — the distance the rod travels, measured between fully retracted and fully extended.
  • Closed centre distance — the length between mounting pin centres when the cylinder is fully retracted.
  • Mounting style — pin or clevis ends, flange or trunnion mounts, and the pin diameters and port sizes and threads.

A cylinder that looks right in a photo but has the wrong pin size, port thread or stroke will cost more in downtime than the cylinder itself cost. When in doubt, send the old cylinder to the workshop for measuring — or ask the supplier to work from the machine model and OEM part number, which most experienced manufacturers can cross-reference.

2. Materials and Seals for the Job

The same specification can be built with very different materials, and the environment decides which ones you need. The barrel of a quality cylinder is made from cold-drawn seamless tube, honed to a smooth finish; the rod is hard-chrome plated steel, and the plating thickness matters in dusty or abrasive jobs where the rod seal constantly wipes grit across the surface. Seals deserve the same attention: polyurethane seals resist wear and extrusion, while the wiper seal and rod seal combination determines how long the cylinder stays dry. Machines working in desert dust, freezing winters or coastal salt air need different seal compounds, so tell the supplier where and how the machine works. 3. Testing and Quality Checks

A cylinder is a pressure vessel, and the testing it receives before shipment is the best measure of a manufacturer's quality. Ask what tests each cylinder goes through: a pressure test at or above the working pressure, a leak test on both chambers, and a rod surface finish check. Reputable manufacturers run every unit and can provide test records or photos on request, and material certificates are available for the barrel, rod and seals. It is also worth asking about the production line itself — whether the factory does its own honing, welding and chrome plating, or outsources them. A factory that controls the full process has tighter tolerances and fewer surprises.

4. Repair or Replace? A Honest Cost Check

Before ordering a new cylinder, it is worth asking whether the old one can be saved. External leaks — oil running down the barrel, wet rods, puddles under the machine — usually come from worn rod seals and wipers, and a seal kit fixes them at a fraction of the cost of a new cylinder. Internal leakage shows up as drift: the boom sinks slowly while the machine sits idle, or the attachment moves on its own. If the barrel is scored, the rod is bent or heavily pitted, or the cylinder has been leaking internally for a long time, replacement is more reliable than repeated resealing. 5. What to Send the Manufacturer

To get an accurate quotation on custom hydraulic cylinders, prepare a short specification sheet:

  • Machine brand, model and serial number; OEM part number if available
  • Bore, rod, stroke and closed centre measurements, or a drawing
  • Mounting style, pin sizes, port sizes and thread types
  • Working pressure and application (digging, lifting, steering)
  • Quantity, target port and delivery date

With that information, a factory-direct supplier will confirm the design, quote the price and lead time, and usually produce a sample or photos for approval before full production. That is also the moment to compare a genuine manufacturer with a trading company: ask where the cylinders are made, whether you can visit or video-call the factory, and whether samples are available. Buying direct from a manufacturer in China typically means better pricing, faster communication on technical details and consistent quality — the reasons most importers make the switch.
