What 107-3554 is
107-3554 is the heavy duty two-strap weld-on base for the J550 nose, cast at 42.9 kg and printed at 548 × 160 × 65 mm against the 980G, 988 and 992. It is not a pocket casting: the two straps run over and under the lip and are welded along both, which is why the same rung uses 160 mm of strap where the flush mount 8E-0464 uses 104 mm, and 65 mm of throat where the flush casting uses 45 mm.
On a 988 that distinction is the whole buying decision. The flush mount 3G-4554 at 34 kg needs a clean pocket cut into the plate — right for a new or re-plated lip. The two-strap casting needs the old base burned off and the plate dressed, and it does not care whether the pocket is still true, which is why it goes onto buckets that have already been rebuilt once or twice. It is also 8.9 kg heavier per point than the flush casting, and 22.9 kg heavier than the J460 flush mount 8E-0464.
The J550 teeth it takes
| Tooth | Profile | Weight | A × B × C | Pin / retainer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9W-8551 | Standard short | 16.0 kg | 280 × 158 × 138 mm | 6Y-8558 / 8E-5559 |
| 9W-8552 | Standard long | 18.5 kg | 336 × 154 × 140 mm | 6Y-8558 / 8E-5559 |
| 9N-4552 | Heavy duty long | 25.5 kg | 352 × 162 × 145 mm | 6Y-8558 / 8E-5559 |
| 9W-1553 | Abrasion | 22.0 kg | 382 × 151 × 165 mm | 6Y-8558 / 8E-5559 |
| 138-6552 | Rock penetration HD | 30.2 kg | 385 × 160 × 55 mm | 6Y-8558 / 8E-5559 |
The alternative pin and retainer pair for the rung is 107-3378 with 107-8559. Neither the J450 pair (8E-0468 / 8E-8469) nor the J600 pair (6I-6608 / 6I-6609) will seat in a J550 bore, and the retainers all begin 8E-8, which is how the wrong one ends up on a set that then starts walking pins.
Freight: what the weight does on a full lip
This is the part of the specification that ends up on the invoice rather than the drawing. At 42.9 kg per casting, a 20-point lip carries 858 kg of base and a 24-point lip carries 1,029 kg — before teeth, which on 9W-8552 add another 370 kg and 444 kg respectively. Compare the same machine on the J460 flush mount 8E-0464 at 20.0 kg and the difference is 22.9 kg per point, 458 kg on a 20-point lip. If a buyer is choosing between the two builds for a new bucket, that is the number to put next to the wear life rather than after it.
Ordering and supply
Supplied as a new aftermarket casting to the dimensions above, FOB Shanghai or CIF to your port, generally 3–7 days from stock and 15–25 days for production quantities. Each lot is weighed and photographed against your order. The metric tables print 42.9 kg and the imperial catalogue prints 92.0 lb (41.7 kg) for this casting, a 1.2 kg gap that becomes 29 kg across a 24-point set, so we quote from the scale rather than the catalogue and put the measured weight on the packing list. Ask for the hardness figure of the lot you are buying and the test slip travels with the offer.
Nothing on this page is a genuine Caterpillar part; the 107-3554 number is used for fitment cross-reference only. For the other three adapters printed for this machine line, see the Cat 988 teeth and adapters guide, and for the bolted alternative on the same lip, the 8E-2467 J450 top bolt-on base.
FAQ
Q: Is 107-3554 the same as 3G-4554?
A: No. Both are J550 bases for the 988 and 992, but 3G-4554 (also printed 7I-9554) is the flush mount at 34 kg that sits in a pocket, while 107-3554 is the two strap casting at 42.9 kg that wraps the lip top and bottom.
Q: What teeth fit it?
A: The J550 family — 9W-8551, 9W-8552, 9N-4552, 9W-1553 and 138-6552, from 16.0 kg to 30.2 kg, all on pin 6Y-8558 with retainer 8E-5559 or the alternative pair 107-3378 and 107-8559.
Q: How much base weight is on a full set?
A: 858 kg on a 20-point lip and 1,029 kg on a 24-point lip, at 42.9 kg per casting, before teeth and pins.
Q: Why do the two catalogues disagree on the weight?
A: 42.9 kg metric against 92.0 lb (41.7 kg) imperial — 1.2 kg per casting, 29 kg across 24 points. We weigh every lot and ship against the measured figure.
