The air cleaner on these machines takes one envelope — round, 281.6 mm across, 339.2 mm long — and Cat sells two elements that fit it: 6I-2501 in the standard grade and 128-2686 in the ultra high efficiency grade. Cat's part page for 128-2686 states the media type as UHE and describes it as a "primary ultra high efficiency air filter" with improved contamination control that holds particulates during a filter change. The dimensions on both pages are identical to the thousandth of an inch, which is exactly why the failure mode is real: a supplier quoting from a cross list can ship you either grade without ever saying which one it is.

The practical rule we give customers is to order by Cat number when the grade matters, and to use cross numbers only as a search lead. If your fleet works in fine dust, or you are trying to stretch service intervals, the UHE element is the one you want. If you are running a mixed fleet and simply want the element that was on the machine, read the number stamped on the old element — both grades are in circulation in the field.

The Fitment Lists Are Not Interchangeable

Identical dimensions do not make identical fitment lists, and this is the one place where a mistake gets expensive. Cat's compatible-model list for 128-2686 covers the 320D, 320D2, 320D3 and 323D generations, the 322B L / 322C / 325B machines, the 950B through 950G and 962G loaders, the 938G, the D6G2 XL and LGP, and the IT38G / IT62G toolcarriers. The list for 6I-2501 is wider: it also carries the 320B and 320C, a long list of D5/D6/D7 tractors, and industrial engine and generator set applications including the 3116, 3126, 3304, 3306, 3406C, 3208 and G3306. So a 320B or 320C owner will not find 128-2686 in the Cat list for his machine, and a fleet running the older dozers and gensets with the same air cleaner should be ordering the standard number.

Fitting, Sealing and the Safety Element

The 128-2686 is a radial-seal element: fitment is as much about the seal face as the part number. A clean seal face, the housing latched shut and the dust ejector clear matter more than any catalogue cross, because a bypassing seal puts dirt straight into the intake duct and leaves no evidence on the element itself. Replace it together with the 6I-2502 secondary element. The secondary is a safety barrier, not a spare filter — an element that has already taken load gives no protection the next time the primary is torn or mis-seated. Cat's own "frequently bought together" block on this part lists the 6I-2502 alongside the fuel elements 1R-0751 and 1R-0753, the engine oil filter 1R-1807 and the fuel/water separator 151-2409, which is a fair description of a full service on a 320D.
