What UHE Means on This Element

Ultra high efficiency is a media grade, not a different housing. The 134-0685 goes into the same air cleaner, in the same position, and seals on the same face as the standard element — what changes is the filter media and what Cat claims for it. Cat's own part page for this number carries three attribute lines: it lasts up to six times longer than standard filters, it is extremely effective in fine dust and soot, and it offers less restriction and higher air flow. Those are the manufacturer's published claims for the UHE grade rather than our measurements, and we quote them as such. What we can say from the field is narrower and more useful: on machines working in crushing dust, sand and soot — the duty most 320D and 320D2 machines see in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America — the primary element is the part that sets the service interval, and the grade you fit decides how often that interval comes round.

Two practical consequences. First, if you are ordering by cross number you are not choosing a grade at all: catalogues publish Donaldson P536457, Fleetguard AF25589 and Baldwin RS3736 against both the standard and the UHE number, because those references describe the envelope. Ask for the Cat number if the grade matters. Second, do not judge the element by how it looks on arrival. The difference between standard and UHE media is not visible to the eye on a finished cartridge, so the number on the box and the supplier's documentation are the only evidence you have.

The Fitment List Is Not the Same as 131-8822's

Cat's list for 134-0685 runs from the 320C through the 320F L and from the 323D through the 323F, including the 321C and 321D LCR and the 322C. What it does not include is the 320B, which does appear on the aftermarket fitment lists for 131-8822. So a 320B owner should be ordering from the 131-8822 list, and any site running a mixed fleet of 320B, 320C and 320D machines ought to keep the two numbers separate on the shelf rather than treat them as one item. Both elements are the same size; the fitment lists are not.

The same caution applies to the housing. These machines were built with two different air cleaner groups — with and without a dust ejector valve — and each group takes a different envelope: 237 mm for this element, 281.6 mm for 6I-2501 and 128-2686. Service Notes

Replace this element with the 131-8821 secondary, not on its own. Cat's own frequently-bought-together block for 134-0685 lists the secondary element alongside the engine oil filter element assembly 322-3155, the fuel filter element 360-8960, the hydraulic filter 5I-8670 and the water separator element 479-4131 — a fair description of what a 320D service takes. Keep the dust ejector valve clear: on a dust-valve cleaner the ejector is what removes the bulk of the dirt before it reaches the element, and a blocked ejector moves that load onto the filter. When you fit the element, check the seal face and the housing latches; a radial-seal element that is not seated properly bypasses dust into the intake duct and leaves no evidence on the element itself, which is exactly why the inner element and the duct are what you inspect when a machine shows dust ingestion.

Q: Is the Cat 134-0685 the same as 131-8822?
A: Same envelope, different efficiency grade and a different Cat number. Cat publishes 134-0685 at 9.331 in (237.0 mm) diameter and 13.0 in (330.2 mm) length with Media Type UHE, and the 131-8822 is the same 237 mm by 330 mm radial-seal primary. Cat's own wording for the UHE element is "Lasts up to six times longer than standard filters" and "Extremely effective in fine dust and soot". Aftermarket catalogues publish overlapping cross numbers for both (Donaldson P536457, Fleetguard AF25589, Baldwin RS3736), so a cross number alone will not tell you which grade you are being offered. Order by Cat number and say which grade you want.
