Caterpillar J600 and J700 bucket teeth with pin 6I-6608, retainer 6I-6609 and weld-on adapters

J600 and J700 are the last two rungs of the Cat J-series that still turn up on ordinary quarry and mining fleets. Below them the teeth go on 320 and 336 class buckets; here they go on 345 to 390 class excavators and on 988 / 992 class wheel loaders, where one tooth casting weighs 29 to 59 kg and the weld-on base matters more than the point. So the questions are narrower than on the smaller rungs: which nose is on the bucket, and which casting on that nose is on the order line.

1. What the Two Noses Cover

The series letter fixes the nose; the machine tells you which base that nose is welded into. Black Cat's adapter table prints the strap thickness it sells against each series and machine family, which is the shortest way to see where J600 and J700 land:

2.00 inJ460988, 980, 973
1.75 inJ400980, 973, 966

Two readings follow. A J600 nose is sold on both a 2.50 in strap for 988 / 990 / 992 loader buckets and a 3.00 in or 3.35 in strap for the 300 Series H, J and W excavators — same tooth family, different base. And J700 overlaps J800 rather than sitting underneath it: its 3.50 in listing includes the 385, the class most often quoted as a J800 job.

2. Every Casting That Carries the J600 Nose

These are the published numbers from the TRASTEEL TSJ catalogue (metric, in kilograms) and Black Cat's Cat J-series catalogue 215.1025 (pounds, converted here at 1 lb = 0.4536 kg). Where a catalogue does not print a profile, the cell is empty — we do not fill gaps with guesses.

The J700 family is heavier on the same profile names — 41 kg against 30.3 kg for the standard long loader point, 72 kg against 52.2 kg for the rock penetration HD — but it is not a simple step up: the J700 standard point at 41 kg is lighter than the J600 abrasion point at 57.5 kg, and neither fits the other's base.

4. The Same Number, Two Published Weights

This is the part of the top end that causes the most arguments over shipped containers, so it is worth printing plainly. For five numbers that appear in both catalogues, the published weights differ:

NumberTRASTEELBlack CatGap
6I-660230.3 kg (loader standard long)77.3 lb / 35.06 kg (standard long)4.8 kg
4T-470241 kg (loader standard long)97.3 lb / 44.13 kg (standard long)3.1 kg

171-170950 kg110.1 lb / 49.94 kg0.06 kg — the one clean agreement

Both are aftermarket catalogues cross-referencing the same Caterpillar numbers, so one of the two figures is a different casting, a different measuring convention, or a printing carried forward from an older edition — the catalogue alone cannot tell you which applies to your order. What we can do is quote the number and the weight you are replacing, confirm the casting against that weight, and put the actual kilo weight of the load on the packing list. On a 100-tooth order the 6I-6602 gap alone is close to half a tonne.

5. Pins and Retainers

On J600 the ordering is simple: one pin number for the plain point, the SYL, the rock chisel and the loader profiles, one retainer to match. On J700 it is not, and the reason sits in the catalogues rather than in the buckets — the excavator rows and the loader weld-on rows are indexed differently. If your warehouseman holds 9U-9616 pins for a J700 bucket that came off a 992, ask for the pin stamped on the old one; a caliper reading of diameter and length settles it in the same email.

6. The Weld-On Bases: 6I-6604 and 222-7700

At this size the base is the expensive line item and the one that decides whether a new set of points lasts. TRASTEEL's published rows:

Three practical points. The HD castings — 6I-6604HD at 54 kg, 6I-6605RH15HD and 6I-6606RH15HD at 66 kg — carry a wear cap, and the cap itself (WC-600) is printed at 7.1 kg. The 222-7700HD at 92.3 kg is roughly twice a J600 base, so moving a 345 bucket up to J700 points is a bucket rebuild, not a set of teeth. And 6I-8804 shows the same catalogue disagreement as the tips — 112 kg against 94.9 kg for the centre position — so confirm base orders by weight as well as number.

7. Loader Side: Bolt-On and Weld-On

On 988 and 992 class buckets the same two noses are carried by loader profiles with their own bases:

BaseSeriesWeightPrinted sizeApplicationPin / retainer

Note the fourth column: the J600 loader base is 190 mm across the back and the J700 loader base is 200 mm, on the same 988 / 992 buckets. If a loader has been rebuilt with one when it should have the other, the new points will sit on a nose that is 10 mm wrong and will work loose within a shift, whatever the pin number says.

8. What to Send Us

  • The number on the tooth — 6I-6602, 4T-4702, 135-9600, not "J600 teeth".
  • The base number or a photo of the nose — 6I-6604 and 222-7700HD do not interchange, and 119-8604 and 171-1704 look alike in a photo of the bucket alone.
  • The pin, or its diameter and length in millimetres.
  • The machine — 345 / 350 / 365 / 375 / 385 / 390 excavator, or 988 / 992 loader, and the bucket width if a corner set is involved.
  • The weight you are replacing, in kilos — the one field that catches the catalogue gaps above.

We supply the J600 and J700 families as aftermarket castings with pins, retainers and bases quoted as one line item, and we weigh and photograph the load against your order before it ships.

FAQ

Q: What pin and retainer does a Cat J600 bucket tooth take?
A: Pin 6I-6608 (alternative 113-9608) and retainer 6I-6609 (alternative 113-9609). Both catalogues print the same hardware for the J600 excavator tips, the loader tips and the 6I-6604 weld-on base, so a mixed box of J600 profiles needs one pin number, not four.

Q: What pin and retainer does a Cat J700 bucket tooth take?
A: The retainer is 4T-4707 (alternative 113-4707) across the family. The pin splits: TRASTEEL prints 9U-9616 (alternative 113-4708) on the excavator tips and bases and 4T-4708 on the 171-1704 loader weld-on base, while Black Cat's J700 pin block prints 4T-4708 with the same 4T-4707 retainer. Quote the number off the pin you pulled.

Q: How heavy is a Cat J600 or J700 bucket tooth?
A: The two catalogues disagree on the same numbers: 6I-6602 is 30.3 kg in TRASTEEL and 77.3 lb / 35.06 kg in Black Cat; 4T-4702 is 41 kg and 97.3 lb / 44.13 kg. Inside the J600 family the published spread runs from 29.3 kg (7I-7609) to 57.5 kg (6I-6603).

Q: Which machines do Cat J600 and J700 teeth fit?
A: The J600 base 6I-6604 is published for 345 / 350 / 365 class buckets and the J700 base 222-7700HD for 365 / 375 / 385 / 390. Loader bases 119-8604 (J600) and 171-1704 (J700) are both published for 988 / 992. Black Cat's strap table puts J600 at 2.50 in for 992 / 990 / 988 and at 3.00 in or 3.35 in on Cat 300 Series H, J and W buckets, and J700 at 3.50 in for 992 and 385.
